Jordan Montgomery held his former team to an unearned run on two hits over 6 2/3 innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the visiting New York Yankees 5-1 on Sunday.
Brendan Donovan went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who won two of three games in the series between historic franchises.
Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole allowed two runs on six hits in six innings. He struck out five with two walks. The Cardinals moved ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning. Nolan Arenado hit a leadoff double before singles by Donovan and Jordan Walker produced a run. One out later, Andrew Knizner hit an RBI single but Cole averted further trouble by getting a double-play grounder from Tommy Edman.
