In his new book, 'We Are the Weather,' the author suggests fighting climate change by going vegan for two meals a day

in late 2018 that said that while people living in undernourished areas could afford to eat a little bit more meat and dairy, people living in places like the U.K. and the U.S. need to reduce meat consumption by 90 percent and dairy by 60 percent. I read that and I thought, “Okay, that’s confusing. I don’t know exactly how I would do that. I don’t want to be a human calorie calculator at meals. I don’t want to keep a little diary of what I’m eating. I don’t see that as being sustainable.

It’s got to be. It’s interesting to see this backlash of, “Well, it’s not healthier.” First of all, I don’t know if people eating burgers and Whoppers are so obsessed with health. That’s not exactly the point. The point for most people is that it’s relatively affordable, it’s available, it’s tasty, it’s food. It’s like when people say vegetarianism is elitist because you’re asking people to buyfrom Whole Foods instead of a McDonald’s burger. It’s not comparing likes with likes.

In your book you grapple with the role of the individual versus the collective — you write that we need structural change, and that no one individual action will change the world, but that millions of people doing so might, that we are the system itself.

This book ultimately reads as a pretty optimistic work — in some ways, it would seem, almost the opposite of the defeatist tone that some people have criticized Jonathan Franzen’s recentI don’t know of anybody who cares about the environment more than Jonathan Franzen does. He’s really passionate about it, it’s genuine. I have often found myself doing what I think he did, which is to go to a binary, to go to an extreme. The world isn’t going to end. We’re not all going to die.
