Jon Wilkin isn't impressed with Leeds Rhinos
Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin did not mince his words when he criticised Leeds Rhinos' performance and recruitment strategy, calling it "shambolic" and labeling them as the "biggest flop" of 2023. The scathing remarks came in the aftermath of Leeds' humiliating 50-0 defeat at the hands of the Wigan Warriors, effectively ending their playoff aspirations and casting a shadow of disappointment over the club.
The crushing defeat epitomised a season of underachievement for a club with a rich history and high expectations. In particular, Wilkin pinpointed recruitment decisions that had seemingly backfired, leaving the team in disarray. When asked by Jenna Brooks about his highs and lows of the season, Wilkin couldn't help firing some backlash onto the Rhinos.Wilkin said: “Hull FC promised so much and looked like they might deliver and they have flopped. Huddersfield have too.
“The biggest flop in Super League is Leeds Rhinos for a number of reasons. Brian McDermott was sacked as coach after a successful period and the culture was branded as toxic and needed to change. "My question is this. Where is their culture now? They have limped out of the play offs and were absolutely battered.
“Their recruitment has been shambolic. If you are talking about a toxic culture back then, then how would you describe it now? Your best player is playing for Castleford , your best young player has left because you wouldn’t pay him enough money."
