The Spanish festival is courting controversy by giving the disgraced former superstar its Donostia Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the world of cinema.
But all that hasn’t deterred San Sebastian, which, unveiling the Donostia Award on Monday, called Depp “one of contemporary cinema’s most talented and versatile actors.” Depp will receive his Donostia Award in San Sebastian on Wednesday, Sept. 22. The festival’s announcement of the award makes no reference to the controversy surrounding Depp or his recent troubles.
FallingSan Sebastian introduced the Donostia Award in 1986, with acting legend Gregory Peck as its first recipient. Previous winners have also included Glenn Ford , Bette Davies , Lauren Bacall , Anthony Hopkins and Glenn Close .
