The Last Week Tonight host has had enough
’s latest segment might make you think twice about calling something your “personal Everest.” On Sunday night, thehost laid into the inexperienced climbers who have flocked to the summit in recent decades, largely thanks to a poorly regulated tourism industry that allows climbers who have no business being on the mountain to attempt the climb—as long as they have $11,000 to spend on a permit.
One might wonder what the problem is with letting rich people risk their lives in the name of bragging rights—but as Oliver pointed out, inexperienced climbers put not only other climbers at risk, but also the sherpas whom they pay to bring them up the mountain. Oh, and then there’s the environmental impact—namely, loads of trash and, more horrifying, a “fecal time bomb” of melting human waste cascading down the slope.
Oliver compared the sherpa-client relationship to the band Simon & Garfunkel: “There is someone along for the ride to the top, and there’s someone pulling all the weight.” The Nepal side of the mountain, Oliver noted, has particularly lax standards; there’s no limits on climbing permits issued per year, and all one needs to secure a permit is $11,000 and a doctor’s note.
“Why on earth are you letting the other half climb?!” Oliver marveled. “If Cirque du Soleil had half its trapeze artists be trained acrobats and the other half enthusiasts with $11,000 and their own tiger bodysuits, you would shut that shit down before someone got badly hurt.” Oliver also showed his audience a clip that perfectly demonstrates the risk and annoyance these novices present to other experienced climbers—in which a single-file line of annoyed climbers waited behind one newbie who couldn’t figure out how to take the next step down the mountain to descend. “Think about the violent rage you felt last time you couldn’t walk down an escalator because a bunch of assholes were standing still,” Oliver said.
