John Kezdy was the lead singer of the influential Chicago punk rock band the Effigies in the 1980s before embarking on a long career as an attorney and prosecutor.

After graduating from Evanston Township High School, Kezdy attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison for a year before leaving school to form the Effigies. Kezdy told the Tribune in 1990 that he became the lead singer for the Effigies simply because no one else wanted to do it. “He let me be part of that, and it was very flattering,” said Albini, Big Black’s vocalist and guitarist. “It made my band’s record seem more legitimate when presented to stores and distributors because we were associated with these other, much better bands.”
“There are a lot of bad people who need to be locked up,” Kezdy told the Tribune in 1995. “I feel totally comfortable, morally and legally, making sure they are. I sleep well at night.” “John could try a murder case, discuss French New Wave cinema, find an all-you-can-eat buffet next to a nail salon, make a sail for a racing ship and inventory the flaws of the Tour de France — and he was one of the funniest persons I ever met,” Elward said.
