John Clayton, a fan-favorite, long-time NFL insider with ESPN, passed away Friday. He was 67.
Clayton, who was 67, was a native of Braddock, Pennsylvania. He began writing about sports as a student at Churchill Area High School, and began covering the Steelers for the Daily Press in St. Marys starting in 1972.
Known as “The Professor,” Clayton was a 1976 Duquesne graduate, who also had a stint covering the Seattle Seahawks, before joining ESPN in 1995. The Seahawks also tweeted about Clayton’s passing writing “Heartbroken” above a longer statement. The Steelers also tweeted about Clayton’s death, calling him a “Pittsburgh media icon.”
