S.F. Opera announces ambitious plans for 100th season, featuring John Adams’ ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ and a work about Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

Acclaimed soparano Julia Bullock will star in the world premiere of John Adams’ “Antony and Cleopatra” for S.F. Opera.January 20, 2022 at 8:04 a.m.

A co-commission with Barcelona’s Liceu Opera, Palermo’s Teatro Massimo, and the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco production directed by Elkhanah Pulitzer will feature a cast led by soprano Julia Bullock and baritone Gerald Finley singing the title roles in a production that melds “the mythic imagery of antiquity with the starry glamour of 1930s Hollywood.” “Antony and Cleopatra” runs for seven performances, through Oct. 5.

After “Antony and Cleopatra,” the fall season continues with Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” in Robert Carson’s staging, conducted by Vassilis Christopoulos and featuring Russian soprano Evgenia Muraveva, making her American debut in the role of Tatyana. 2023 brings Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” ; the new production by director Amon Miyamoto imagines the opera through the eyes of Cio-Cio-San’s son, Trouble. Kim conducts, and the cast features soprano Karah Son and tenor Michael Fabiano.
