After the humiliating Ashes defeat in Australia this winter Root still believed he could rebuild this England side - a Test team that has lost its way in red ball cricket.
His overall record as captain is good but there’s no doubt the challenges that he has faced on top of the cricket have made Root's tenure an incredibly hard one. It’s curtailed his performances with the bat and no doubt he and everyone connected to England would love this decision to liberate him - to allow him to rediscover the form that landed him the job in the first place.
