Musgrove turns in best start of season; Soto, Tatis hit home runs to second deck in back-to-back innings as Padres take series opener
Joe Musgrove badly wanted to make his season debut at Citi Field when the Padres visited the Queens ballpark to play the Mets in early April.
But in a second chance to pitch in the Big Apple this year, this time in the Bronx, Musgrove was again magnificent on the big stage in a game his team needed him to be. Musgrove was not quite as dominant Friday as he was on Oct. 9 against the Mets, when he allowed one hit in the Padres’ 6-0 Game 3 victory. But he handily worked his first quality start, and for much of the night he was every bit as good as he had been a borough over in the postseason.
They would get Musgrove out of the game with a pair of one-out singles, a grounder by Willie Calhoun off the glove of a diving Jake Cronenworth at second base and a dribbler toward third base that Anthony Volpe beat out. But four pitches after fouling a ball hard off his left knee and needing a couple minutes to walk it off, Soto unleashed his frustration on a cutter from Vasquez — and on his bat, which Soto flung to the turf as he watched his 114.1 missile disappear into the second deck above right field.
