Breaking: Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin will not run for governor of West Virginia in 2020, a spokesman confirmed

Manchin, who was governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010, won a difficult Senate re-election battle in 2018, beating GOP Attorney General Patrick Morrissey by three percentage points. President Donald Trump won West Virginia by 42 points in 2016. Manchin would have had to run with Trump on the ballot.with POLITICO, Manchin said being governor of West Virginia was the “best job in the world.”last week showed that Manchin could beat Justice in a race for governor.

Manchin would not have had to have given up his Senate seat to run and would have appointed his replacement if elected governor. Democrats, however, would have had difficulty keeping the seat when it would have been up for grabs in 2022. Last year, Manchin crossed party lines and voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. He’s also previously endorsed Republican colleague Susan Collins of Maine, who is facing a tough race for re-election in 2020.

In addition, his legislation with Sen. Pat Toomey to expand background checks to all commercial sales has garnered renewed attention amid mass shootings in Texas and Ohio this summer.
