To celebrate TheBlackPhone home release, we chat with author Joe_Hill about his friendship with Scott Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill, his thoughts on adaptations, and more:

Joe Hill's celebrated short story The Black Phone has made its way to the screen with the help of co-writer/director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill. The story centers on a young boy kidnaped by a serial child abductor as he communicates with the ghosts of past victims to try and escape.

Joe Hill: Well, two things, first, not to argue the question, I don't know that I am that protective, actually, about the work. Modestly, in the sense of it'd be great if someone's going to make a film or TV show out of a story if it doesn't suck. But I accept that the story on the page is one thing, and that an adaptation will inevitably be something else that expresses the interests and enthusiasms and focus of the creators who will make that version of the story.

Locke and Key went through several phases of development, for a while it was with Fox and later was with Hulu, before it wound up at Netflix, and Scott was intimately involved in the development of the Hulu version, and would have directed it if not for a conflict with other projects. The Black Phone, in a lot of ways, was our makeup call and it was just such a blast.

But it was also more, it was also so much more than the short story, Scott had brought in all this rich stuff that's very autobiographical about growing up in the dirty, violent 1970s in North Denver. Cargill expanded the story in a really interesting way, making it an escape room, Finney is getting calls on this disconnected black phone from The Grabber's previous victims, and each of them have something new to offer to sort of help with the escape.

That said, I couldn't have, in my wildest dreams, anticipated how iconic Tom Savini and Jason Baker's mask for The Grabber would be. That is a really extraordinary image and I think is a big part of why the film was such an instant hit. People look at that mask and it's iconic the way Freddy Krueger's glove is iconic, the way that Michael Myers' mask is iconic. That thing was crafted to haunt your sleep at 2 a.m.

I didn't get a chance to accidentally walk through one of the shots on The Black Phone, it was filmed during high COVID days, Scott did not screw around about the COVID protocols. It was a real locked-down set, people were in the masks and almost like the CSI suits, with the slippers and stuff like that.
