As Republicans go through the motions of a presidential primary season, the president is getting a jump on the 2024 general election campaign in crucial battleground states. “He is preparing for a long slog next year,” one Biden insider says. “And the campaign is laying the groundwork in ways where they are not trying to grab headlines every day.
The president’s campaign is pushing back on the national poll numbers, both predictably and credibly, with plenty of reasons why they should be discounted, including the fact that the actual election is still 13 months away and thatwas in a similarly lousy position at a similar point in his reelection cycle. A second major hurdle in these states—GOP-backed voting rules—is beyond his control. Which is why voting rights advocates likeof important cases that helped defeat Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 results, are in court fighting restrictive laws, such as Georgia’s SB 202. “We’ve struck down parts of it, including the ban on providing food and water to voters waiting in line,” Elias says.
