The production team of Angela Black worked with Women's Aid to make sure their story was 'truthful'
is a taut Hitchcockian thriller that exposes the very real horror of domestic abuse, inspired by the flurry of personal accounts of coercive control from courageous survivors in the wake of the MeToo movement. Its prescient arrival also coincides with campaigns calling for thestar as Angela, a woman who appears to be living a charmed life in her elegant London home with a devoted husband and two loving young sons.
'Not only do you want it to be truthful to the people that it will affect, but you want to make sure you're never falling into any stereotype that came before,' producer Sarah Hammond said. 'So we were careful, we never wanted to be gratuitous with violence. We wanted to make sure that [the violence] often happened off screen because it's more about Angela's experience than it is about what's physically happening to her.
Director Craig Viveiros described how he wanted to educate viewers on the psychological side of abuse that is so common, but not always fully understood. 'And it's the reason why the show is so important – to expose those micro-aggressions that people can normalise in relationships like this. It was important for us to stand up and say, 'If you're suffering, if you're a victim of this, it's OK to seek help'. It's about recognising what those signals are, and sometimes it's not that easy if you're in the middle of it.
