💬 Joanna Page on Love Actually: 'It's a flipping film - sometimes we take things too seriously' 🎬 As the film returns to cinemas for one night only, the actor reminisces about one of the most beloved and controversial Christmas films of all time
Page is moving house the day we speak and is a bit flustered. For over a decade, she and her husband James Thornton have lived with their growing family in a cottage in the Oxfordshire countryside.
“I’m pretty similar to Stacey in terms of how impulsive and also homely I am,” she says. “But I think I’m harder, too. People often think that I am just all sweetness and light, but James often says, ‘Jesus, if only people knew what you’re really like.’” I mean, I moved from Wales to London when I was 18 [to go to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts] and I was so homesick I cried for two and a half years. But I didn’t give up.
“The first day I walked into the room for a reading and literally the entire cast was there. Martine McCutcheon was opposite me, Hugh Grant was next to her. There was Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson. Oh god, I was so nervous.” Page is promoting a Christmas campaign by the National Lottery, which is giving away cinema tickets to lottery players to seeat local cinemas today. The National Lottery raises around £30m every week for good causes, most of which are for smaller projects, like Pets as Therapy, which Page recently visited.
