Former president Jimmy Carter, 95, has been hospitalized to relieve pressure in his brain caused by bleeding from multiple falls. The procedure will take place Tuesday morning.

Carter’s recent years are a testament to the high frequency of falls in the elderly population. And despite his seamless perseverance, they’re a serious threat. According to the, more than one out of four people aged 65 and older fall each year, and one out of five falls causes a serious injury like broken bones or a head injury. Additionally, the CDC reports that falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries. Falling once doubles the likelihood of it happening again.
