Buffett died at 76.
“Margaritaville,” released on Feb. 14, 1977, quickly took on a life of its own, becoming a state of mind for those “wastin’ away,” an excuse for a life of low-key fun and escapism for those “growing older, but not up.”
Buffett, a Southern Miss alumnus, was honored prior to the Golden Eagles’ football season opener Saturday. USM hosted Alcorn State at M.M. Roberts Stadium. Before a moment of silence was held, the public address announcer said, , “The University of Southern Mississippi joins the world in mourning his loss and reminds everyone, as Jimmy would sing to you, ‘Just enjoy this ride on my trip around the sun until it is done.’”
