“He knew I wanted to get into the NFL and he introduced me to Steve, and Steve introduced me to Bill,” Schwartz said. “The conversation with Bill lasted about 5 seconds. ‘Hi, nice to meet you’ and that was it. And then maybe four or five months later, I got a call asking me to come in for an unpaid internship.”
He explained how, just a few days after he was hired, he was one of the only ones left in the building after everyone left town following minicamp. With a late-night flight, he hung around the facility. Belichick started searching through the refrigerator for the turkey, and asked Schwartz if he had seen it.
“It’s those times where you’re alone in your office and you don’t think there’s anybody else there. That’s the stuff that makes a difference.”“I think by the time I was done I was up to about $20,000 a year, so I was feeling good about myself,” Schwartz said. Having impressed Belichick and Saban with his football acumen during those early years, Schwartz remained in close contact with both, Belichick helped him get hired by Titans coach Jeff Fisher as a defensive assistant in 1999. He also tried to hire Schwartz away from Fisher, which led to his promotion to Titans defensive coordinator in 2001.
