These types of insurance premiums, called temporary total disability policies, reimburse significant portions of players’ guaranteed salaries if they suffer injuries that compromise the players’ ability to play the rest of the season.The Jets were offered policies ranging from $1 million to $4 million, per the report, with the more expensive options covering roughly 60 percent, or $22 million, of Rodgers’ $37 million contract this year.
The Packers, with whom Rodgers spent the first 18 years of his career before the team traded him to the Jets this past offseason, routinely took out disability policies, according to Sportico.Rodgers has dealt with several other injuries in his career, including problems with his collarbone, foot and knee, among others.The NBA and NHL require teams to take out these types of insurance policies on their highest-paid players, but MLB and the NFL leave it to the teams.
