Matt Smith and Jessica Chastain discuss the pressure of taking on iconic characters, their work in ‘The Forgiven,’ and the physical transformations their recent work required.
I think that adds to the character. What great actors do is they take something like that and they incorporate it, because I would've had no idea that that happened. It feels like your character starts to become more, I don't know, grounded and solid and immovable, which feels like you matured. You both have these really physical transformations with wigs and costuming.
Chastain: It depends. I mean, I have the same hair and makeup team for all my stuff. So they've gotten it down to a science, but old-age makeup takes longer. But the wig? Probably 30 minutes.Wow, see mine's an hour and a half every day. And I find sitting still a problem at the best of times, so I find that bit quite challenging. I find I have to listen to music.
Chastain: Do you listen to something for your character or do you listen to something from a completely different world? It depends what sort of mood I'm in. Also, do you not find that the way you approach the job is often different? With this, I used to prepare by reading — it sounds a bit silly — a speech fromthat I'd learned every morning and it would sort of get me in the zone a bit.
You both jump through mediums. You do stage, you do TV, you do film. I'm sure they're all challenging for different reasons, but is there one that you feel pushes you the most?I find the battle of theater… I mean, that's why I love that you go back to it, Jess, because I always try to go back because I think that's where you sort of sharpen your tools a bit. There's something about the stamina and the craft of it that is so challenging, and brilliant, and alive.
