A Toms River man who admitted to pushing a police officer outside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 will spend the next 18 months in prison, well below what attorneys suggested he serve behind bars.Federal sentencing guidelines for his case call for 24 to 30 months, and a federal prosecutor argued he get 27 months.
“The success and outstanding character of his children support the position that Salvatore Vassallo is a good person who got caught up in a bad situation and acted very poorly during that situation,” his attorney, Ronald J. Ricci wrote in a presentence report. Vassallo never posted on social media or on the internet about his presence on Jan. 6, and is unlikely to ever be in trouble with the law again, Ricci wrote.
