The No Hard Feelings creative team endorses the controversial premise of the Jennifer Lawrence comedy, which has received backlash online.
The No Hard Feelings creative team defends the film’s highly controversial premise. In No Hard Feelings, 32-year-old Maddie is hired by a middle-aged couple to date their 19-year-old son . The couple’s goal is for their sheltered son to get more life experience. No Hard Feelings is directed by Good Boys director Gene Stupnitsky.
Now, the film's team is speaking up against critics who call No Hard Feeling's premise controversial. In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Benati described the film as a satirical “cautionary tale” that warns against helicopter parenting. Benati’s words were supported by Broderick, who explained No Hard Feelings explores what happens when “parents decide to mess with nature.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT “It’s a cautionary tale. If you are a helicopter parent who puts your child in such a bubble, they do not know how to exist outside of that bubble, you are going to make the exact opposite and insane choice, which is what they are doing here. I feel like it is a very satirical look at what can happen if you do not give your children a longer leash to figure things out for themselves.
Audiences have every right to be concerned based on the premise alone of No Hard Feelings. While 19-year-old Percy is legally an adult, he’s undoubtedly portrayed as an awkward teenager. In contrast to this, 32-year-old Maddie is a financially struggling but fully formed adult. So, it is understandable that their relationship can cause viewers to cringe both at their age gap and maturity gap.
The No Hard Feelings team clearly wants to dispel this cringe regarding the movie. From the retelling of the real-life Craigslist ad that inspired No Hard Feelings, to the discussion of its helicopter parenting themes, No Hard Feelings’ creative team seeks to redeem the film in viewers’ minds. The team may not fully rid No Hard Feelings of the criticism, but it is a step in the right direction for those who want to believe that No Hard Feelings isn’t merely creepy.
