, set in 1825, opens with a lesson in power. Clare , an Irish convict sentenced to a British penal colony on Tasmania—which was then known by its colonial title, Van Diemen's Land—wants her freedom.
But Hawkins’s request is denied, too, by a man in power who makes a point of humiliating him. So begin the grave consequences of that humiliation, which play out in one of the most disturbing sequences to hit movie screens in recent memory. By the end of’s opening 30 minutes, Clare will have been sexually assaulted multiple times, by multiple men, in full view of Kent’s steady, dispassionate camera. Her husband and child will be dead too—violence from which Kent, again, refuses to flinch.
It helps that Kent’s shooting style, with its squareish 4:3 aspect ratio—less boxy than films like the recent, but still limited enough to foreclose all sense of possibility or breadth—and precise compositions. For much of the film, we hurtle through the Kent’s ideas and carefully-staged moments of violence with startling care.
