Soon enough, Colbert found himself uttering nonsensical thoughts of his own—mimicking Goldblum’s improvisatory cadence. It was at that point that Goldblum, for some reason, decided to quote Alfred Noyes’s “The Highwayman.”
“The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door,” Goldblum intoned. Colbert didn’t miss a beat, uttering the poem’s opening lines with a spark of excited recognition: “The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees. The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas. The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor. And the highwayman came riding—riding—riding—The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.
“I lost my virginity,” Goldblum said. “I was 18. Came offstage at the Delacorte Theater. It was the biggest hit the Shakespeare festival had ever had.” “Eighteen, Delacorte Theater, lost your virginity,” Colbert repeated back. “There is no one like Jeff Goldblum.”
