Authorities detained a man at the scene who was suspected of throwing a pipe-like object at the prime minister.

Panic erupted Saturday as an explosion rang out just as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was about to give a speech in the city of Wakayama, not far from where former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated last summer.

Footage broadcast on local television showed several people, presumably member’s of Kishida’s security team, frantically trying to shield him while authorities sought to find the cause of the blast. At least six men dragged Kishida out of the venue, clutching him by the arms and legs. He was reportedly not injured.
