Nine years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the Japanese government opens part of the last town that had been off-limits due to radiation haqzards. It's a symbolic move to show the region's recovery ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
A guard opens the gate to the town in Futaba, Fukushima prefecture, northern Japan at midnight Wednesday, March 4, 2020. Japan’s government partially lifted an entry ban for Futaba, the last town that remained off-limits since it was entirely forced to evacuate following the Fukushima nuclear disaster nine years ago.
The partial lifting of the entry ban comes weeks before the Olympic torch starts from another town in Fukushima. The torch could also arrive in Futaba, about 4 kilometers from the wrecked nuclear plant. The gate at a checkpoint was opened at midnight Tuesday, and Futaba officials placed a signboard at their new town office.
