Dinner under cherry blossom trees in the Museum District transports Tiger Ball guests to...

Asia Society Texas’ annual gala, Tiger Ball 2023: Celebrating the Beauty and Elegance of Japan, in Houston on March 3, 2023.Asia Society Texas Center understands the assignment. Short programs go a long way toward an event's bottom line. Which is why most of the action at the 2023 Tiger Ball happened behind the scenes.

The evening began with a private champagne toast to salute this year's honorees, Kathy and Glen Gondo, in recognition of the couple's commitment to fostering meaningful relationships through Japanese culture. Board chair Y. Ping Sun gave opening remarks before board member Gordon Quan invited guests to raise their flutes. The Gondo's son surprised his parents with a cake lit by sparklers to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Quan and wife Sylvia and Julie and John Cogan co-chaired the Japan-inspired festivities, which ultimately raised more than $1.5 million. Funds support Asia Society Texas Center's 125-plus annual public programs. More than 575 guests in black-tie or traditional Japanese dress were welcomed by drummers from Kaminari Taiko. Prashe Décor transformed the tented gala pavilion into"dinner in Kyoto" with pink parasols, cherry blossom trees and floral sculptures.

As a parting gift, or"omiyage," the Gondos sent gala-goers home with handmade sake cups in the urushi or Mashiko-yaki style. The thoughtful keepsake served as a nod to the resilience of artisans in Fukushima who were impacted by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
