The JamesWebbSpaceTelescope team has reported on its efforts to align the observatory's mirror, confirming that it's performing beyond expectations.
Work to align the James Webb Space Telescope’s enormous mirror has gone so well that the mission team believes its optical performance will be able to “meet or exceed the science goals the observatory was built to achieve.”
The James Webb Space Telescope launched toward the end of December 2021 in a mission expected to last at least 10 years. No critical issues were discovered, nor was any measurable contamination or blockages to Webb’s optical path, the team said, adding that its tests showed the observatory is able to successfully gather light from distant objects and deliver it to its instruments.
