For most rookies, the adjustment to the NFL is a steep learning curve. So far, though, Jaguars rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd seems to be catching on just fine.
During his introductory news conference, the day after he was drafted, he was heard asking coach Doug Pederson for a playbook like he wanted to get started immediately. Pederson told him he had to wait a little longer before he could give him one.
"When you get a guy that's hungry like that and ready to get coached, that's somebody special, and he'll just continue to grow and continue to perform and continue to do what we need him to do." The Jaguars set out to build a foundation with their defense by making the linebackers group the strength. Jacksonville drafted No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker to become their starting outside linebacker.
But like Walker, Lloyd is working with the No. 1 defense and going into next month's training camp, he could become the linebacker entrusted with the green dot on his helmet, where he hears the play call from the sideline and relays it to the huddle. Last season, Lloyd was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year after having 111 tackles, including 22 tackles for loss, the second-most in the country, and seven sacks. He led the Utes to their first Rose Bowl appearance in school history.Despite his tremendous talent, Lloyd says he's an overachiever.
Pederson believes his defense could develop into a strong unit behind a young core of players like Lloyd mixed with proven veterans such as Josh Allen, Foye Oluokun and Roy Robertson-Harris.
