Left-hander Joe Palumbo, who spent nine years in the organization, recently signed a minor league contract and will work as a reliever. Palumbo, 28, who has a long injury history, spent last season in the San Francisco organization. He made only five appearances, however, just three of them above the Arizona Complex League. Palumbo appeared in nine games for the Rangers from 2019-20, but allowed 20 runs in 19 innings.
Right-hander Alex Speas, whose fastball has touched 102 mph, has decided to return to baseball after sitting out last year while considering his future. Speas, who turns 25 on March 4, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and has made just 15 professional appearances since then. The former second-round pick had struggled to throw strikes, allowing 26 walks in 15.1 innings in 2021. He did not pitch last year.
