Young shortstop shows uncanny poise, confidence off the field; hits three singles in Cactus League opener
There is an air about Jackson Merrill that at least matches his talent and serves to amplify it.
Merrill replaced Xander Bogaerts at shortstop in the fifth inning and went 3-for-3 with three singles in the Padres’ 3-2 loss to the Mariners. Merrill, ranked by Baseball America as the No.21 prospect in the minor leagues, will get plenty of time in big-league camp. And in big-league spring training games.
