Since the beginning of the novel coronavirus crisis, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has displayed exceptional empathy for her people. Today, she shared that in solidarity with those hit by COVID-19, she and other top officials will be taking a pay cut for the next six months.

"We acknowledge New Zealanders who are reliant on wage subsidies, taking pay cuts, and losing their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic," said Ardern in a press conference."While it in itself won't shift the government's overall fiscal position, it is about leadership," she explained to reporters.

The news comes after a further 20 New Zealanders were diagnosed with COVID-19 overnight bringing the total of confirmed and probable cases to The cut will decrease Ardern's annual salary from approximately NZ$470,000 to NZ$376,000. Over six months, that pay cut comes out to NZ$45,000 or roughly $27,000 USD.

"If there were ever a time to close the gap between groups of people across New Zealand in different positions, it is now," said Ardern. Alongside Ardern in taking the 20% salary cut is opposition leader Simon Bridges, Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, all 25 cabinet ministers and 34 key public service chief executives such as the Ministry of Health's Director-General of Health Dr. Ashley Bloomfield who's led the elimination response to the crisis and is busier than ever.

We've already said there won't be any pay rises right across the public service and this is not something that's currently before us … it's not something that's being considered,” said Morrison in a radio interview.
