Italy signs up for China's 'Silk Road' trade initiative brushing off Western and critics' worries that it overwhelmingly favours Chinese companies
He Lifeng, Chairman of China's National Development and Reform Commission and Italian Minister of Labor and Industry Luigi Di Maio sign trade agreements at Villa Madama in Rome, Italy March 23, 2019.
The signing ceremony was the highlight of a three-day trip to Italy by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which has boosted ties between the two nations at a time when the United States is locked in a trade war with China. However, critics say it is a Trojan Horse that will let China get control of sensitive technologies and critical infrastructure.
Full details of the contracts were not immediately revealed, but a government source said they could potentially be worth up to 20 billion euros .
