Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof reflects on the series' divisive finale, acknowledging the huge task and saying, 'It was time to pay the piper.'

Co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof reflects back on Lost's controversial ending. Lost premiered in September 2004 and ran for six seasons before ending in May 2010. The series is widely considered one of the greatest television series of all time, despite the series' final episode being incredibly divisive among viewers.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In an interview with Esquire, Lindelof looks back at the divisive Lost ending and says that he wouldn't change a thing. Lindelof admits that there was massive pressure on the writing team surrounding the show's finale, with too many questions to wrap up in a way that would satisfy every viewer.

"What would I change, or do I have any regrets is one of the questions that I get asked the most often. It seems arrogant to say I would change nothing, but it’s the truth.

Why Lost's Finale Was So Divisive Similarly to Lindelof's remarks, the general reception was that the Lost finale fit well with the rest of the show since the series offered more questions than answers. The final episode is just as cryptic as the rest of Lost and still leaves viewers debating its true meaning over a decade later. However, this debate resulted in some demands for a different ending.

Whether audiences loved or hated the final episode, Lindelof is content with the ending he offered for the iconic series. Lost was a show known for being divisive and sparking conversations, and the finale episode did that, for better or worse. While the episode has since gone down in television history as deeply controversial, if not entirely disappointing, Lindelof prepared for the Lost final episode to be a major point of contention for viewers.
