is making the same journey after a run at the Arts last year, but there is little chance of this unexciting musical achieving aThe show famously lasted for just one month on Broadway in 2011 and, as it grinds on, one understands why. Quite how the creative trio of Ivan Menchell , Don Black and Frank Wildhorn managed to take the sizzling story of those two infamous Texan lover/criminals and render it simultaneously devoid of romance and thrill is bewildering.
The proscenium arch here is symbolically pocked with bullet holes. After the initial news of their deaths, aged 23 and 25 in a police shoot-out, we spool back to the start, with Bonnie dreaming of being an “it girl” in the manner of actress Clara Bow. Clyde , is from a family of poor sharecroppers and his idols are outlaws, Billy the Kid and Al Capone, but Gage unfortunately makes him far less vivid than the peppy McCann. Everyone tries to warn Bonnie off Clyde, but the lady’s not for turning.
The music spans genres, taking in gospel and rock, and an early eye-catcher is the perky country and western number “You’re Going Back to Jail”, sung with gusto by Clyde’s sister-in-law Blanche as she tries desperately to keep her in-two-minds husband Buck on the straight and narrow. But with the American Dream grasped tight in the claws of the Great Depression and the country queuing on bread lines, opportunities for law-abiding progress are limited.
