Renea LaRiviere's pouf sleeved, bow-covered label, Zepherina, is based on LaRiviere's familial past and named after her great-grandmother.

Renea LaRiviere was born and raised in Northampton, Massachusetts. As a child she fell in love with the idea of designing clothes, crafting narratives around garments inspired by pictures in old family photo albums., the label she launched last year after graduating from Parsons and working as a textile designer in New York, is named for her great-grandmother.

Zepherina, LaRiviere says, is a “character” carefully crafted from “all of the pictures, objects, and stories of my mother, aunts, and grandmother. Hearing them talk about their memories was like a game of telephone; each story was just slightly different.

LaRiviere only knew Zepherina for a short time as a child before she passed, but a couple of years ago her mother took her to Zepherina’s farm. “We saw the picnic grove and cow field and the mountain that was framed in a window inside the house. My mom wanted me to see all of this as an adult because she is very poetic that way.”

Though LaRiviere is based in New York City, she visits Northampton often, spending time sifting through old albums and writing notes on old postcards that once belonged to Zepherina. She sends these cards to nursing homes nearby or to “neighbors who may need a bit of warmth and mystery.” LaRiviere also delivers books. “I hate the idea of people being lonely. I also love dialogue and the energy of connecting with a total stranger.

The designer’s sentiments hit home for those of us living quarantined amid the coronavirus pandemic. So too does her love of family, and her passion for digging deep into the roots of her ancestry. As she says, “I think it’s so human to touch and feel the past.”
