Mary Scott was killed in 1969 and her case grew cold until DNA evidence led to the arrest of a former Navy sailor more than 50 years later.
‘He Has No Memory of Committing Homicide': Man Waives Extradition in 1969 San Diego Cold-Case Killing
Police said that after the case went cold, it was later re-evaluated by the cold case units of the San Diego Police Department and San Diego County District Attorney's Office. At Sipos' sentencing hearing, defense attorney Brooke LaFrance argued her client's case was hampered by the inability to bring in several witnesses, including many who have since died. She also said evidence pointed to another suspect, though Deputy District Attorney Chris Lindberg said that man's DNA, unlike Sipos', was excluded from the crime scene.Sign up for our News Headlines newsletter.
Scott's sister, Rosalie Sanz, who was 16 at the time of Scott's death, said Sipos"robbed of so much of her life," including getting to see her two young daughters grow up.
