Through Brexit and Boris, BBCLauraK became the UK’s most controversial broadcaster. Now she’s ready for her next challenge, she tells KerryNMcDermott.

If Kuenssberg’s matter-of-fact façade is designed to mask inner torment, it’s convincing. “The BBC is a huge organisation and we don’t always get everything right, so if there is genuine criticism then of course you’ve got to look at that. But that’s different to someone who’s just getting off on being mean about a woman on the telly.” When she found herself being tailed around Brighton by a bodyguard, quitting would not have been an option.

What does get to her is the idea that the abuse she receives might deter girls from pursuing a career in journalism or politics. “We have to be alive to how horrible it can be, particularly for people starting out, and support them where we can,” she says. “It drives me crazy that young people coming into the industry – and particularly young women – might look at what’s happened online and think, ‘That is not a place for me.

She says fame was never part of the plan when she started out. “I didn’t want to be on air at all,” she says. “I wanted to be the editor of– I think I might have even said that in my first interview when I was 21. I was bold as brass, but actually my knees were knocking under the table.” Born in Rome, Kuenssberg was raised in Glasgow, with her older brother and sister, by accomplished parents .

After graduating with an MA in history from the University of Edinburgh – and following a stint in Washington, DC in her third year, where she interned on an NBC political show – she joined BBC North East & Cumbria in 2000 as a trainee journalist. Her ascent was swift: by 2003 she was a regular on the, and she was promoted to chief political correspondent in 2009.
