To keep their Cup window open, the Lightning have depleted their draft pick and prospect assets. So how do they keep churning out NHL contributors? JoeSmithNHL investigates:

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Ben Groulx sunk into the chair behind his desk in the bowels of the Oncenter War Memorial and offered a stare, then a smile.

The 54-year-old coaching lifer donned a Syracuse Crunch T-shirt and sweatpants, along with a five o’clock shadow. There were no personal effects on his desk in the bare-bones, blue-and-white-painted, “game-day” office — just a Pepsi mini fridge in the corner and a glossy photo from a 2014 Crunch game hanging on the wall behind the desk. On the wooden desk, there was some loose paper, a pack of gum and bottles of water and hand sanitizer.

He grabs the water bottle in his right hand and tells them, ‘This is where you are.” Then he grabs the hand sanitizer with his left: “This is the NHL.”Groulx laughed. “Most of them don’t know. I say, ‘Well, we’re going to find out.’” Cole Koepke thought he had answers in his first conversation with Groulx, in late September of 2021. Groulx opened the talk by saying, “Tell me who you are.” Koepke, the former University of Minnesota-Duluth star forward, was caught off guard. He told Groulx he was a player who loved to use his size and speed. He loved to shoot. He could kill penalties. To which Groulx replied: “That’s my job. To help you.”team, could be the organization’s latest development success story.
