Dom Toretto actor VinDiesel explains why the events of FastX are so deeply connected to 2011’s Fast Five, promising that it will all make sense. FastAndFurious

Fast X star Vin Diesel clarifies why the upcoming Fast & Furious film has such a deep connection to 2011's Fast Five. Directed by Louis Leterrier, Fast X is set to serve as the penultimate installment in the long-running franchise. The upcoming sequel sees Diesel's Dom and his crew face off against Jason Momoa's Dante, a villain out for revenge after the death of his father in Fast Five.

Ahead of the Fast X release date, Diesel, in a recent interview with Total Film , offers a further explanation regarding why the film is going back to the events of Fast Five. Ultimately, he suggests, F9's flashback sequences and Fast X's Fast Five connections are part of a larger plan for the end of the franchise to fully mine all that the Fast & Furious franchise has to offer.

In that line of thinking, there is so much un-mined territory within the films that, when you follow the storyline, it produces a really interesting and rewarding story.

After F9 scored somewhat middling reviews and arguably took the franchise way too far into the realm of ridiculousness, Fast X going back to Fast Five could be a breath of fresh air. Letterier has also revealed that the Fast X features more practical stunts and grounded action than more recent installments, suggesting the movie could end up being similar in tone and overall feel as well.

Fast X being connected to Fast Five could also make Momoa's villain more compelling. While the Fast X trailer shows that Dante is a truly deranged and unstable individual, he's also motivated by the death of a family member, which helps to ground him. Not only that, but Dante's quest for revenge helps to establish that Dom's actions in the franchise do actually have consequences.
