The Austin troupe returns to Houston with another one-of-a-kind evening of contemporary dance at the Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston
“It’s an exclusive program,” said Ishida, a fourth-generation Japanese American who founded her namesake company in the spring of 2019, blending her experience as a professional dancer with her educational pursuits in creative writing and ancient Greek philosophy at UCLA. “All of the works are quite different, and they are all world premieres, so Houston audiences really luck out. You may never see this combination of art and artists together ever again. It’s a special thing.
While the majority of the creative process occurs in the two weeks leading up to opening night, Ishida brought in dancers early to start choreographing “among dim shapes” last October, and in typical Ishida fashion, her approach began with a narrative. The 30-minute piece – set to music by German-born British composer Max Richter, who is known for scoring HBO’s “The Leftovers” – is a personal study that follows one couple and the ghosts they carry from past relationships.
