After watching Avatar: The Way of Water, some fans adamantly believe they spotted Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the sequel – were they right?

Thirteen years following James Cameron's massive box office hit, the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, hit theaters in late 2022, and now that it's available on streaming, fans think they saw Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the film. Like Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water was a massive triumph and quickly became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The sequel takes place 16 years after the events of the first movie, and the cast is stacked with stars. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, and Giovanni Ribisi return in the film, and Kate Winslet, Jemaine Clement, and Edie Falco play new characters. After watching Avatar: The Way of Water, many viewers are confident that The Rock is among the star-filled cast.

No, The Rock Isn't In Avatar 2 - Why People Think He Is Unfortunately, the character that fans are convinced was Dwayne Johnson in Avatar: The Way of Water isn't actually The Rock. It seems as though some people are mistaking Shane Rangi for the famous star. Rangi, a New Zealand actor, plays a Matador co-pilot in the background of the sequel, but his role isn't the only one in the film that viewers think was played by The Rock.

Cliff Curtis plays Tonowari, the chief of the Metkayina clan of the Na'vi, in Avatar: The Way of Water, and some fans also believe that The Rock portrays him. Tonowari is a heavily CGI-ed character, so it's easier to confuse actors. However, just because Tonowari and The Rock have similar tattoos and bulk, that doesn't mean that the actor played him in Avatar: The Way of Water — all the credit should go to Curtis.

Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, played by Matt Gerald, returns in the film, but this time, he was in his Avatar form, not his human body. So, with all the CGI, audience members mistook him for Diesel in Avatar: The Way of Water. Plus, Diesel previously teased that he was involved with the Avatar movies, so it was easy to believe it was him in the sequel.
