How true is the story of Cry Macho?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho is one of the latest films by the acclaimed actor and director, but is it based on a true story? Clint Eastwood tends to make movies focusing on narratives that actually happened, leading many to assume that Cry Macho followed this same pattern. The film is completely realistic, further supporting this assumption. So, here is everything we know about the accuracy of the story behind Cry Macho.
Cry Macho is a 2021 western drama starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, with the film following a rodeo star who is tasked with finding the son of his former boss and bringing him home. Throughout Cry Macho, Eastwood's Mike Milo and Eduardo Minett's Rafo develop a bond that carries them through their treacherous journey. Although Cry Macho isn't as popular as some of Eastwood's other works, it is a really solid film, and the Eastwood movie can now be seen on Netflix.
Rather than being based on a true story, Cry Macho is actually based on a 1975 book of the same name. Cry Macho, written by N. Richard Nash, tells roughly the same story, although creative liberties were taken with the film. Various attempts at adapting Cry Macho have been made for decades, with Eastwood even getting the opportunity to star in Cry Macho all the way back in 1988. However, the film never happened until 2021, with the fictional story only making it to the big screen then.
2010's Hereafter was the last fictional film Eastwood directed before 2021's Cry Macho, with him following up Hereafter with seven movies based on true stories. 2011's J. Edgar, 2014's Jersey Boys, 2014's American Sniper, 2016's Sully, 2018's The 15:17 to Paris, 2018's The Mule, and 2019's Richard Jewell were all based on true stories.
