The Guardians are looking at a wide-range of managerial candidates with varying skill sets.
Chris Antonetti, Guardians' president of baseball operations, and the rest of the front office has compiled a lengthy list of candidates to find a replacement for manager Terry Francona.Would you agree that an experienced manager with a good record would be a better choice to be the Guardians next manager than a person who has never managed at this level?I think it’s important that the Guardians next manager has some managerial experience, whether it’s in the minors or big leagues.
The Guardians’ initial list of candidates was between 45 and 48 people. They want to interview as many people from varying backgrounds in the game that they can. I’m sure not all of them have managed in the big leagues. But a lot of them have coached and played in the big leagues, minors and college. Some have held front-office jobs. All that counts.
Then again if you blow out your transmission, you’re not going to call your dentist to look under the hood.to talk to other team’s personnel if that team is in the playoffs? I’m talking about a guy like Will Venable with Texas. Will Brian Sweeney or Ruben Niebla, two former Cleveland coaches, get consideration?The Guardians can ask for permission to interview a staff member on a playoff team, but it’s up to the candidate’s team to grant that permission.
I would not be surprised if Niebla or Sweeney have been discussed among Cleveland’s executives. The fact that they’re both pitching coaches would make them an interesting choice. Currently, Colorado’s Bud Black is the only former pitcher managing a big league team. Will Matt Underwood, Rick Manning and Andre Knott be back on Bally Sports Great Lakes next year to do Guardians’ games?That’s the plan as of right now, but Diamond Sports Group, parent company of Bally Sports, is far from a stable entity at the moment. The best I can tell you is stay tuned.
