A murderer from Irthlingborough who killed a grandfather in 2012 has died in prison. Gary Christopher Monaghan was serving a life sentence after he and two other people beat the man to death.
Monaghan, 74, was nine years into his life sentence at HMP Berwyn in north Wales when he died last month, reported North Wales Live. Monaghan, along with Jennifer Ryan and John York, had all denied murdering Glenn Clary but were found guilty at Northampton Crown Court in March 2013. Mr Clary, a 60-year-old grandad, was tied up and beaten to death in an attack in Irthlingborough in August 2012. Court reports at the time stated that the attack took place at Monaghan's home on Crouch Road.Mr Clary and Monaghan were there drinking cider together before they were joined by Ryan and York. The subsequent attack was filmed on a mobile phone belonging to one of the three.
At an inquest opening held at Ruthin County Hall on Monday, David Lewis, assistant coroner for North Wales east and central, heard that Monaghan had passed away on Tuesday, August 30. The former merchant navy officer had been taken to Nightingale House Hospice for palliative care prior to his death which was the result of natural causes, the court heard.
A medical cause of death was not provided at the inquest which was adjourned to a future date, pending further investigation. John York was himself killed in his cell at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire back in 2015.
