The alleged attack is reported to have taken place on Sunday night in Bordeaux city centre.
A spokesperson for Irish police told Sky News they are liaising with local authorities in France.
"Members of An Garda Síochána currently deployed in France for the duration of the Rugby World Cup tournament to assist Irish people visiting France are liaising with local authorities in relation to an alleged incident," the spokesperson said. "The investigation is a matter for French police. An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time."
Around 600,000 rugby supporters from abroad are expected to visit France over the coming weeks during the tournament, according to the country's police.
