Local authorities put a curfew in place in Iraq’s northern city of Kirkuk after protests broke out demanding the reopening of a highway linking the city to Erbil, which resulted in at least one civilian death.
Last week, protests broke out in Kirkuk against a government decision to hand over the building to the KDP, which argues that the building was previously used by them and it should be given back to the party. / Photo: AA
At least one civilian has been killed and eight other people injured during rival protests in the multi-ethnic Iraqi city of Kirkuk, a local official said, amid days of brewing tensions. The identity and the circumstances surrounding the death were not immediately clear, the director of the local health authority Ziad Khalaf told AFP news agency on Saturday, adding that those injured had been hit by bullets, stones or glass.Following this, local authorities declared a curfew in the city in a statement, while Kirkuk police called on local residents to return to their homes.
