Iran has seized a foreign-registered oil tanker in the Persian Gulf, the country’s state-run media announced Thursday.

Twelve crews members were on the Panamanian-flagged vessel when it was captured near the Strait of Hormuz. The Iran Revolutionary Guards Corp., a powerful organization with deep links to the military and business, accused the tanker of trying to smuggle about a million liters of oil. The nationalities of the crew members were not immediately known.U.S. Central Command in Bahrain, where the Navy is based, says it is aware of what Iran is reporting but has no response to it yet.
