Protesters gathered in multiple cities across the country despite the brutal crackdown by the Iranian regime

In Iran, 40-day commemorations of the dead are common and mark the end of the traditional mourning period. Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyed Mohammad Hosseini were hanged on 7 January after being convicted for allegedly killing a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s volunteer Basij force in the city of Karaj during a demonstration. Both maintained their innocence throughout the arrest and trial.

Four men have now been executed since protests began in September. They faced quick, closed-door trials which have been widely criticised. The UN has condemned them as “unfair trials based on forced confessions”.show a crowd in Karaj chanting the names of the recently executed men, as well as anti-regime slogans.

The non-governmental organisation Human Rights Activists in Iran shared a video on Friday allegedly showing hundreds of people demonstrating in Zahedan, a city in the southern Baluchistan province, which was the site of a violent crackdown on peaceful protesters and where there have since been mass arrests.
