This $5 smartphone hack silently compromises iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy devices
The attacks work by exploiting the micro-electro-mechanical systems microphone technology used in most smartphones. MEMS microphones use acoustic sensors within a diaphragm plate that translate sound waves into an electrical signal. It's that signal which, when decoded, becomes the command in question.
If all of those previously mentioned mitigating factors don't reassure you that there's not a lot to see here in terms of real-world risk right now, the researchers suggest that to defend against the SurfingAttack threat users should reduce the"touching surface area" of the phone with the tabletop, place it on soft woven fabric or use thick cases made of"uncommon materials" such as wood.
